A Legacy of Double Proposition: Current Issues in English Language Instruction in Malaysia
Thursday, March 7, 12.30-1.30
Kuldip Kaur Karam Singh
Professor, Open University Malaysia
Fulbright Scholar, Penn State University
Over the past few decades, teaching and learning English in Malaysian public schools has been profoundly impacted by shifts in language policy, changes in syllabi and increasing diversity among learners. The discussion in this seminar will draw on several strands of research to address related concerns: the impact of diverging English language policy; the disconnect between school-based instruction and English language ability; and the outcomes of research aimed at improving ESL teachers’ classroom practices. The presentation will include recommendations for teacher professional development, teacher education programs as well as research in ESL as it applies to the Malaysian educational context.
A light lunch will be served.
All welcome
