Biography

Yipeng Zhang is a PhD student in LLED, where he also earned his MA. His master’s research used critical discourse analysis to examine generative AI policies in Canadian universities, investigating how institutional discourses govern GenAI-mediated academic literacies in relation to neoliberal and human-centric ideologies. Supported by a Tuum Est Hua Xia Fellowship, his doctoral research explores the politics of language and literacy situated within critical applied linguistics. As an East Asian immigrant student with a linguistic repertoire of Chinese, English, and French, his current research interests centre on translanguaging, multilingual identities, and language socialization across changing educational contexts. He is particularly interested in how language ideologies and power relations shape language practices, identity negotiation, and socialization. Bringing critical discourse analysis into dialogue with ethnographic inquiry, his doctoral research seeks to understand how multilingual/international students navigate, reproduce, and contest language ideologies as they engage in translingual practices to negotiate identities and participation.
