Working Towards a Digitally Inclusive Society* will address current practices, challenges and possibilities for digital literacy education in communities that experience various forms of inequality across income, ability, health, gender and race. These inequalities are manifesting and intensifying in digital ecosystems, where automated government, technology design and market-based digital infrastructure are pushing people to the margins of citizenship in a digital era. The forum adopts an intersectional approach paying close attention to how different groups are being positioned within digital ecosystems.

The forum will include keynotes, panel discussion featuring representatives of groups with diverse experiences of digital equity, focused topic discussions and breakout groups. The forum will be of interest to adult educators and literacy workers, community agencies, policy makers, municipal and provincial services, and others who are invested in promoting digital literacy and digital inclusion.

Keynote Speaker: Marianela Ramos Capelo, OpenMedia
Marianela Ramos Capelo is OpenMedia’s Design Specialist. She studied Graphic Design at Langara College and later Communication at Simon Fraser University, where she also held a couple of undergraduate research fellowships. She is interested in the intersections of media, design, and culture. In her spare time, she co-hosts The Intersection of Things, a digital rights podcast with a feminist twist.
