Texts that changed us: Transforming language and literacy education research and practice

Texts that changed us: Transforming language and literacy education research and practice

In this roundtable, we invite LLED graduate students to introduce texts (expansively conceived) that have transformed their thinking, expanded their horizon, unsettled their nest, or decolonized their mind—in short, texts that changed them. The aim of doing so is to share transformative texts among us to catalyze broader changes in our discourses, disciplinary canons, course syllabi, and so forth.

So much of our work as graduate students involves getting to grips with what has come before. Where do the boundaries of the fields we work in lie? Who are the canonical theorists we must know and cite? How does our work fit in? Only then can we know where to plant a flag and claim our unique contribution. But hopefully, during that process, we also encounter texts that radically change how we think about what we do. Texts from other fields that make familiar constructs strange again. Texts that may not be “authorized” in our discipline. Texts that challenge the colonizing metaphors that shape the very foundations of research practice, such as “field” and “consent”.

A transformative text could be anything: a dance, a conversation, a dramatic performance, a painting, or a plain old journal article.

Interested roundtable participants can submit up to three texts, and will be invited to share how each text transformed them during the roundtable. The time will be split evenly between participants, so each will have between 5–10 minutes (using no more than one slide per text). This is a chance for LLED grads to reflect on our moments of deep learning, for faculty members to learn about which texts have spoken to LLED students most profoundly, and for us to collectively catalyze broader change.
