1:45-2:55 | Japanese and Korean Study-Abroad Students’ Beliefs about English as a Global Language: A Comparison with Workplace Communication Research (Tomoyo Okuda)Language ideology valorizes English for all purposes, including business communication. However, previous research on workplace communication has revealed complex multilingual realities. Employing qualitative interviews with South Korean and Japanese study-abroad students, this study compares their beliefs about the role of English for transnational work with previous research on workplace communication. Exchanging stories: A narrative exploration of older adult language learning experiences This talk presents narrative ethnography that explored connections between language learning and senior immigrants’ sense of belonging to local communities and Canadian society. As storytelling played a central role in generation of narrative data, the talk specifically outlines the ways the study was structured and the multiple narrative forms produced as the result. Internationalizing K-12 Public Schools in BC: What the ELL is going on? This presentation examines the relationship between international education and English as an additional language (ELL) education in a K-12 public education setting. Using data generated as part of a larger study with fee-paying international students (FIS) in an urban school district, I make the case that ELL education is one of the key sites at which FIS recruitment and presence is having a socializing impact on BC’s public schools.

3:05-4:15 | Examining and Expanding the Scope of Assessment in EAP Programs (Shahid Abrar-ul-Hassan)The instructional role of assessment is often underutilized, but it is essential for the effectiveness of EAP programs. Besides measuring learners’ linguistic skills, assessment tools can remarkably enhance teaching and learning. This presentation will offer a validated three-dimensional framework and relevant tools for optimizing EAP assessment practices. Intercultural and Inclusive Pedagogy in Higher Education As an instructor in the Faculty of Education, I am interested in understanding how our pedagogical practices contribute to the institution’s strategic plan of building “inter-cultural aptitudes”. Through this three-day workshop for instructional designers and managers, I intend to gather perspectives that will empower educators “to choose teaching strategies that create equitable and inclusive learning environments”. I will share some details and objectives of this workshop I plan to attend this summer. Education Technology at Rits A wide variety of educational technology tools are available to us as faculty to help us in our instructional preparation, lesson delivery, classroom management, assessment, and provision of pedagogical support. In this presentation, I will demonstrate how selected resources can be used in our context to make our pedagogical activities less burdensome for us and more captivating for our students. |
