Biography
I am Osanka Rathnasiri from Sri Lanka, and my academic background is in education policy, teaching English as a second language (TESL), linguistics, and English language and literature. These specializations, my lived realities as a multilingual speaker of English, and the professional experiences gained over a decade of working as a lecturer in English-medium higher educational contexts in Sri Lanka have led me to my doctoral studies at UBC. Through reflexive practices and social justice approaches to education, I work on exploring critical issues surrounding English-medium instruction (EMI) in the global South of Sri Lanka. I am interested in questions of language ideologies, identity, investment, power, and politics in language and literacy education.
