Towards Cognitive Justice in Language Policy: The Case of Contemporary Brazil

Presented by the Department of Language and Literacy Education and by the Canada Research Chair (Dr. Vanessa de Oliveira Andreotti) in Race, Inequalities and Global Change:

This presentation looks at the ideologies behind the epistemology that currently predominates in official language policy in Brazil. It argues that in formerly colonized spaces, though colonization may have officially ended, its drastic negative effects still persist in the form of a hierarchy of races, knowledges and languages; this hinders not only democracy but also local knowledges and local scientific production. The presentation is based on the recent concepts of Decolonial Theories (Mignolo 2000; Grosfoguel 2007; Mignolo & Walsh 2018; Ndlovu-Gathsheni 2019) and those of the Epistemologies of the South (Sousa Santos 2018).
