Trends and Issues in Literacy Instruction | This course explores current trends in literacy instruction, critical literacies, and multiliteracies. LLED 459 is the companion to, or continuation of, LLED 391, expanding the concept of reading to explore a broader conception of literacy. Issues of literacy and technology, multiliteracies, critical literacy, teaching with and through literature, comics, graphic novels, teaching writing, literacy and diverse languages and cultures, barriers to literacy, and assessment are some of the areas explored. LLED 459 is designed to help students move beyond introductory principles in reading theory and practice and to explore related areas, issues or topics. This course will explore current trends and issues in a variety of areas related to literacy education, including information on changing reading perspectives, new developments in multiple literacies, critical literacy, new technologies and literacy, and literacies, languages, and cultures.
