The Department of Language and Literacy Education is pleased to announce the Literacy Research Fellowship. Established in 2026 through a generous gift from an anonymous donor, this $10,000 annual award is offered above minimum funding to the most outstanding incoming doctoral student. The fellowship reflects the donor’s commitment to recognizing excellence and supporting future leaders who will contribute meaningfully to the advancement of literacy research.
Selection Process: The award is made on the recommendation of the LLED PhD Admissions Committee. All PhD applicants are automatically considered.
2026/27 Winner: Teri Hofferd is a writer and former high school English teacher who began her doctoral studies in the Department of Language and Literacy Education at the University of British Columbia in September 2026. She is the recipient of the 2022 Language and Literacy Researchers of Canada Master’s Thesis Award for her study, “Writing as a practice of freedom: Finding the courage to resist completion.” Her doctoral research investigates how secondary English educators who identify as teacher–writers negotiate the relationship between their personal writing practices and their writing pedagogy in the context of the emergence of generative artificial intelligence.”
