LCU Colloquium 2017

On May 4 and 5, 2017, UBC’s Vantage College and SFU’s Centre for English Language Learning, Teaching and Research will co-host a colloquium on language in the Canadian university co-organized Sandra Zappa-Hollman (Department of Language and Literacy Education) and colleagues from other Canadian institutions.

The colloquium will bring together scholars from across Canada to identify and discuss critical issues facing post-secondary educational institutions that stem from internationalization in higher education, increasing linguistic diversity of the Canadian population, and recognition of the critical importance of indigenous languages in Canada. The colloquium is funded by a Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC) Connections Grant and sponsored by Simon Fraser University, the University of British Columbia, University of Toronto, University of Victoria, and University of Waterloo.

The goals of the colloquium are to:

  1. encourage collaboration and interaction among Canadian researchers, educators, and administrators working at the intersection of applied linguistics and higher education;
  2. facilitate the production and use of research knowledge in addressing the impact of linguistic diversity in higher education; and
  3. support and expand the development of a research network for ongoing mobilization and dissemination of knowledge about language in higher education.

Plenary speakers include: Dr. Jasone Cenoz, University of the Basque Country, Dr. Durk Gorter, Ikerbasque Research Professor, Dr. Eunice Jang, OISE/University of Toronto, and Dr. Christian Chun, University of Massachusetts, Boston.

More information can be found on the colloquium website.
