Towards a socially contextualized grammar education in francophone minority settings

Joël Thibeault has been an assistant professor of French education at the University of Regina since 2016. His research focuses on the teaching and learning of French grammar within plurilingual and minority settings, as well as on the sociolinguistic issues that characterize the practice of French teachers who work in these educational environments. He has written extensively on the use of children’s literature in the teaching of linguistic conventions and the role of the learner’s plural linguistic repertoire when teaching the language of schooling. Through his research, he aims to show how grammar education can provide a space in which the learners’ languages are fully recognized and utilized, preparing them for a world marked by linguistic diversity.

Joël Thibeault est professeur adjoint à la Faculté d’éducation de l’Université de Regina depuis 2016. Sa recherche porte sur l’enseignement et l’apprentissage de la grammaire du français en contexte plurilingue et minoritaire, et aux enjeux sociolinguistiques qui caractérisent la pratique des enseignants qui œuvrent dans ces milieux. Il s’intéresse en outre au recours à la littérature de jeunesse dans l’enseignement des conventions linguistiques et au rôle que joue le répertoire linguistique composite de l’élève dans l’apprentissage de la langue de scolarisation. De manière générale, ses travaux visent à montrer comment l’enseignement grammatical peut offrir l’espace dans lequel les langues de l’élève peuvent être pleinement reconnues et utilisées, le préparant ainsi à évoluer dans un monde marqué par la diversité linguistique.
