Please join us in congratulating Dr. Reg D’Silva on being the recipient of the 2023 Language and Literacy Educational Leadership Award (LLELA)!
Dr. Reg D’Silva is the outstanding recipient of the 2023 Language and Literacy Educational Leadership Award. Dr. D’Silva has demonstrated excellence through exceptional leadership in the Faculty of Education over eight years, going above and beyond his successful work as former Director of the Ritsumeikan Academic Exchange program and current role as Associate Dean Equity and Strategic Programs in the Faculty of Education at UBC. His commitment to equity, inclusion, diversity and decolonization is fundamental to his everyday interactions, and has had a profound impact both within the Faculty, and across the University. His efforts have had a multiplying effect, both through mentorship and providing new funding opportunities for faculty colleagues, graduate students and undergraduates to engage in proactive curriculum development and enhancement that embraces anti-racist and decolonizing initiatives, as well as attaining grants to improve the University’s orientation and acculturation processes for international students. This award will assist Dr. D’Silva’s continued work in Education Leadership across the Faculty.
This annual award, now in its second year, was created from an anonymous donation to recognize exceptional leadership among Educational Leadership faculty in the Department of Language and Literacy Education. The LLELA committee is comprised of Dr. Kedrick James (Chair, Professor of Teaching), Dr. Leah Macfadyen (2022 LLELA recipient, Associate Professor of Teaching) and Dr. Kristiina Kumpuleinen (Department Head, Professor). They met in camera to, review criteria for the award, consider all applications and determine the most deserving recipient of this recognition.
