The Department of Language & Literacy Education and Research-based Theatre jointly presents: The Art of Interviewing
Dr. Tetsuro Shigematsu
Do you feel nervous when you point a microphone at someone? Is it because you feel unprepared? Are you worried about missing something important? Do you trust your equipment? If you worry about any of these things, it isn’t your fault. Despite the fact that interviewing is the foundational research technique to elicit data about a subject, there is little information about how to do it effectively. Join former CBC radio host, and award-winning playwright, Dr. Tetsuro Shigematsu as he shares in-the field tested techniques that will allow you to hone your interviewing skills, and capture stories that will enrich your research methodologically and aesthetically.
Governor General’s Award finalist, Tetsuro Shigematsu, became the first person-of-colour to host a daily national radio program in Canada, where he coproduced nearly a thousand hours of network programming, as well as writing and producing over 50 pieces of radio drama. A former writer for This Hour Has 22 Minutes, Tetsuro’s solo-work Empire of the Son was described by theatre critic Colin Thomas as, “one of the best shows ever to come out of Vancouver. Ever.” In 2018, he earned his PhD in Education at UBC as a Vanier scholar, and now serves as Creative Director of UBC’s Research-based Theatre Lab.
