French instructors work as a team and co-ordinate and integrate projects whenever possible. Emphasis is put on teaching French as a second language, teaching content in French, and learning about language development, bilingualism and language policies.

There is a high demand for French Immersion teachers at the secondary level in British Columbia.
Please note that students may write their exams in French or English.
The University of British Columbia’s Faculty of Education presents a new teacher education cohort option for those interested in teaching French in elementary school settings. Candidates may not speak French fluently but are able to communicate at a rudimentary level and are interested in developing language proficiency as well as the methodological skills to teach and inspire others to learn the language.
The program is similar to the regular 12-month BEd program but includes two additional courses: EDUC 490 (French Conversation for Teachers) and LLED 324 (French Methodology), both conducted in French. The practicum takes place in generalist classrooms with core French as a teaching area delivered to several classes in the school.
It is highly recommended that, prior to commencing the program in September, FLAGS applicants undertake a summer immersion experience to maximize their potential for success in this French-oriented program, for example, by applying to the Explore! program (a 5-week program at a French-Canadian university that is eligible for provincially-administered federal funding), UBC’s 3 week Institut d’été, or an alternative immersive experience (to be discussed with the program coordinator, Dr. Wendy Carr).
