MEd in Modern Language Education

We offer specialized, individualized and interdisciplinary graduate programs in French immersion, French as a Second or Foreign Language [FSL, FFL], Asia-Pacific and the other modern language education. These programs involve study in second language curriculum, assessment, second language acquisition, bilingualism and intercultural education.

Recent thesis topics include teaching, instruction, acquisition, curriculum development, evaluation, language planning, interlanguage pragmatics, sociolinguistic and other applied linguistic approaches to modern language education as well as post-structural, critical theory and feminist approaches to Asia-Pacific literature. Autonomous learning, multi-media, distance education, language acquisition, the role of the L1 and L2 in teaching, and the study of language loss are additional recent thesis topics

MEd Cohort Program for French Immersion & Core French Teachers

This 30-credit Masters degree cohort program will be taught entirely in French, with some readings in English. French proficiency is a requirement to apply for this program.

Six courses will be held in Vancouver BC in the fall and winters sessions and four courses will be taught in Montreal QC during the summer sessions. Participants will be immersed in French language and culture in the heart of Montreal for three weeks summer during both summers of the two year program.

Action research on a second language teaching/learning topic or a topic related to French immersion is a prominent feature of the program. Therefore, the programm will include foundation courses in research methods and content courses related to bilingualism and second language acquisition. In addition, participants will reflect on a specific topic of their interest in relation to their classroom.

Courses will be delivered over two years in a fixed order for eight weeks on Friday evenings (3 hours) and Saturdays (6 hours) every two weeks as well as during 3 concentrated weeks over the two summer sessions in Montreal.

Asia Pacific Educational Studies in Language, Culture and Curriculum

Graduate specialization jointly offered by:
Modern Language Education, Department of Language & Literacy Education and the Centre for the Study of Curriculum and Instruction.

Specialization Description

Given the growing interest in the Asia-Pacific as a region of increasing economic and cultural exchange, the Faculty of Education now offers a specialization for educators interested in Asia Pacific Educational Studies with a special focus on language, culture, and curriculum. This graduate specialization spans a broad range of school subject areas including Asia Pacific language education and language aspects of social studies, business education, literature, humanities, history, geography, and economics.

The intent of the specialization is to prepare educators for leadership roles in developing instructional models, curriculum materials, and content expertise in all areas related to Asia Pacific Educational Studies and for settings that range from Early Childhood to Post-Secondary. The University of British Columbia is particularly well-situated, academically and geographically, to act as a Canadian hub of Asia Pacific Studies, with degree programs, research centres, institutes, and special library collections in various aspects of this growing field of inquiry.

The Modern Language Education M.Ed., M.A. degrees and the LLED Ph.D. offered through the Department of Language & Literacy Education, are for students interested in developing educational programs in the teaching of Asian languages and cultural understanding, as well as in second language acquisition in the Asia Pacific context.

The Curriculum and Instruction M. Ed., M.A., and Ph.D. degrees, offered through the Centre for the Study of Curriculum and Instruction, are for students interested in the development , implementation, and/or evaluation of Asia Pacific educational programs in such related areas as global and anti-racist education, as well as in other school subject areas.

Asia-Pacific Specialization Students are encouraged to take additional courses in other Departments and Faculties (eg. Anthropology and Sociology, Asian Studies, Adult Education Educational Studies and Educational Psychology and Special Education) as their individualized program of studies requires.
