LLED Scholarships
#01986 Language and Literacy Education Prize (TESL)
The Department of Language and Literacy Education has a graduate scholarship for Doctoral and Masters' students researching in the area of Teaching English as a Second Language (TESL). Two graduate students in LLED, John Kibblewhite and Ruth Allman, along with Dr. Lee Gunderson, initiated this fund in 2000. Many faculty, graduate students, and friends of LLED have contributed to the fund. Award winners are selected on the basis of academic merit through an annual competition. The award is valued around $600 and the deadline for receipt of application is in early spring. The specific date of the deadline will be announced in the call for nomination each year.
Eligibility Criteria
PhD and Masters' students researching in the area of Teaching English
as a Second Language (TESL) who are nearing completion of the programme.
Selection Criteria
Scholarship winners are selected on the basis of academic merit.
The following materials must be submitted:

- Statement of program of research (1 page)
- Two letters of support (one must be from your supervisor)
- Copies of transcripts
#1993 Language and Literacy Education Graduate Prize
The Department of Language and Literacy Education has several graduate scholarships for Masters' and Doctoral students. Funding for this series of scholarships was donated by members of the Department of Language and Literacy Education who were involved in teaching and/or co-ordinating the External Programs and Learning Technologies cohorts. Award winners are selected on the basis of nomination through an annual competition. There are four awards, each valued at $500. The deadline for receipt of application is in early May. The specific date of the deadline will be announced in the call for application each year.
Eligibility Criteria and Application Process
The following awards are open to all graduate students in the Department
of Language and Literacy Education.
• $500 Award for the Best MEd Graduating Paper (submit the following
materials: cover letter, two nomination letters, and a 2/3-page summary
of the graduating paper)
•
$500 Award for the Best MA Thesis (submit the following materials: cover
letter, two nomination letters, and a 2/3-page summary of the thesis)
•
2 X $500 Awards for Outstanding Service in the Department (1 Doctoral,
1 Master's) (submit the following materials: cover letter, a curriculum
vitae detailing your service work, and two nomination letters)
Selection Criteria
Scholarship winners for the MEd paper and MA thesis are selected on the
basis of nomination and academic merit. Winners of the Service Awards
are selected on the basis of nomination and the strength of the record
of service.

New Funding Initiative for Post-Doctoral Fellows
The OGPR is pleased to announce the 2006-2007 Faculty of Education Post-Doctoral
Fellows Conference Travel Grant funding initiative. The principal goals
of this initiative are to provide financial support to Post-Doctoral Fellows
who must travel to present their work at conferences, and to also increase
the opportunity of Post-Doctoral fellows to build their scholarly profiles/track
record. The initiative is for any Post-Doctoral fellow in the Faculty of
Education who is the first author and presenter of a paper, poster session,
or workshop at a local, national or international conference.

Graduate Student Travel Funding
Students can apply for conference travel grants through LLED, OGPR, and FoGS.

Overview: In an effort to support graduate students’ travel
to present their work at local, national or international conferences and
to develop their scholarly profiles, the Department provides a limited
number of travel grants. Students must be presenting or co-presenting
(paper, poster, symposium) to be eligible. Conferences for which funding
is sought should take place before all degree requirements have been
met.
Current and previous recipients
Eligibility: Magistral and Doctoral students are
eligible for $250 minimum per degree in funding. Because of budgetary
constraints, only a limited
number of grants will be available each year. However, if the amount
budgeted exceeds the amount requested in any academic year, the extra
funds will be distributed to successful applicants. The LLED student
travel grant can be used in conjunction with travel grants awarded by
the Faculty of Graduate Studies and the Office of Graduate Programs and
Research. These are reimbursement grants and students are reimbursed
after the expenses are incurred. Grants may be used to assist with accommodations,
meals, registration and travel.
Application: Applications should be submitted to the Graduate Secretary
and must include:
1. Your name and program (e.g., MA or Ph.D)
2. Graduation date expected
3. Title of your presentation
4. Name of the conference
5. When?
6. Where (e.g., city, country)?
7. Have you received the LLED Travel Award during the current program?
8. Have you or do you expect to receive any other sources of funding
for this trip?
9. Please attach your proposal, a written invitation (or confirmation
of acceptance of your proposal) to present at the conference, and a budget
sheet.
The deadline for receipt of applications is in early spring. The specific date of the deadline will be announced in the call for application each year. The award covers travel between March 15 the previous year and March 31 the current year for students who are not graduating in the current year and between March 15 the previous year and Dec 31 the current year for those who are graduating in the current year. For each travel award, students must submit the appropriate receipts after the conference.
International Partial Tuition Fee Scholarship
Full-time international students commencing on or after September 1, 1997
are eligible for an International Partial Tuition Scholarship around $1,500
each year for the entire period of their Master’s or Doctoral studies
if they meet the following conditions:
•
full-time international student holding a valid student visa,
•
maintain satisfactory academic standing,
•
tuition is not being paid by an external sponsor or source.
There is no need to apply for this scholarship and all admitted international students are considered.
Graduate Entrance Scholarship (GES) for incoming students
In order to be considered for a Graduate Entrance Scholarship, admission
applications must be received by the required deadline date.

Graduate Awards website.
Please note that students, prior to being nominated for the Killam Awards,
are required, if eligible, to apply for major scholarship support from
one of the federal granting agencies such as NSERC, SSHRC, MRC, NHRDP etc.

In addition, many of the professors within the Faculty of Education have funded projects and they employ students as Research Assistants. These vary from year to year and from project to project. The Department of Language & Literacy Education also employs a number of Teaching Assistants, primarily for work in the teacher education program. Teaching Assistants in the teacher education program are normally teachers certified by the province of British Columbia to teach in elementary or secondary schools. A number of other assistantships are possible for individuals to assist professors in the Faculty of Education. These require a thorough knowledge of English pedagogy. The form for applying for a TA or GRA position is available for downloading on our jobs page. Positions are posted in March and the deadline for submissions is April 30.
