ECED 508A Section 051 (3) - Early Childhood Education - Review of Research

Instructor: Dr. Jim Anderson
Winter 2008/09 - Term 1 - Monday 1630-1900 - SCRF 210
Offered through: Institute for Early Childhood Education and Research

This course is designed to examine the breadth of research in early childhood education in order to expose students to the field. In addition to building our knowledge of research findings as they relate to young children, we will examine the types of research questions posed, the perspectives which inform early childhood researchers, and the ways in which they design, execute, and report their studies. As a collective, we will ascertain the prominent trends and challenges apparent in the research, and attempt to establish gaps in the literature that can inform future research. Within this frame, students will also be introduced to UBC researchers who situate their inquiries in early childhood education.

Students in this seminar will be expected to critically read and discuss research literature in early childhood education and to consider in depth some aspect of the field that pertains to their interest or inquiries. Various data collection and analysis techniques will be explored through seminar activities. An important goal of this course is to connect research and practice through drawing on students’ experiences in the field and to applying research findings to practical contexts. Students will also be supported in using research skills to further explore issues in the field of early childhood education.
